In 2026, Creative Hungary, under the Budapest Select umbrella brand, will return for the fifth time to Milan Design Week, the world’s most important and influential design event, showcasing the outstanding contemporary design works and artefacts of the Hungarian design scene. The Budapest Select – Patterns of Being exhibition will present 65 works by 26 Hungarian designers in Milan’s 5VIE design district from 21 to 26 April 2026. The display examines the role of humans in shaping the world through the intersection of design and art, connecting with this year’s Milan Design Week theme, “Be the Project.”

The exhibition highlights the diversity of contemporary Hungarian design, featuring furniture, lighting objects, and collectible design pieces, within an installation setting that emphasises both traditional material knowledge and an experimental approach. The selection made based on the concept of Hanna Imre, chosen as the curator by the professional jury, focuses on the ever-evolving relationship between humans and their environment, while sensitively responding to contemporary social, cultural, and ecological challenges. The project’s overarching vision draws attention to the conceptual and communal role of contemporary design, offering new perspectives on the interpretation of material culture. Structured around five thematic units — Current, Aspiration, Fate, Circularity, and Responsibility — the exhibition offers a complex experience in which the dramaturgy of material, light, sound, and space harmoniously shapes the rhythm of the visitor’s reception.

The exhibition’s spatial concept was designed by VÜ Architects, commissioned following the decision of the expert panel. Their reed-based installation organises the works on display into an atmospheric, “breathing” space. The use of reeds, which holds archetypal significance in Hungarian culture, simultaneously references tradition and innovation, while adding an independent conceptual layer to the exhibition’s narrative.

Created by Creative Hungary, Budapest Select aims to showcase Hungarian design brands on a unified, internationally recognisable platform, while preserving each brand’s unique character. In recent years, the programme has presented the work of Hungarian creators in professional contexts in London, Paris, Milan, and Dubai, contributing to the positioning of Budapest and Hungary as a defining presence in the Central European design region.

This year’s Hungarian collective presence at Milan Design Week marks the fifth edition: after shared exhibition venues in previous years, such as the Triennale or Alcova, in 2025 and 2026, Hungarian creations can be discovered in a dedicated exhibition within the prestigious 5VIE district, drawing even more focused attention to contemporary Hungarian design on the international stage.
