The Budapest Select – Patterns of Being exhibition will open at one of the world’s most important design events, in Milan’s 5VIE design district, from 21 to 26 April 2026, providing Hungarian product and object designers with an international showcasing opportunity. This year, the Budapest Select platform, brought to life by Creative Hungary, exhibits works by 26 Hungarian product designers and fine and industrial artists, presenting a diverse selection of contemporary Hungarian design through 65 objects.
The brands represent different generations and genres in the domestic design scene; the participants include furniture designers building on an architectural approach, object creators with an autonomous artistic mindset, multidisciplinary studios, and those who create their visual worlds through the contemporary reinterpretation of artisanal knowledge.
In several cases, a sustainable approach lies at the heart of the design, with a focus on a sensitive and conscious application of natural materials, including wood, stone, textiles, or ceramics. At the same time, other creators examine the possibilities of industrial surfaces, modular systems, and the use of space in an installation context. The object selection features refined, functional furniture, conceptual objects, autonomous art pieces, and collectible design works, occupying the boundary between objects of use and artistic creation.
The curatorial concept of Budapest Select – Patterns of Being explores humans’ role in shaping the world at the cross-section of design and art, responding to cultural, social, and ecological challenges. The presented creations carry not only aesthetic value but also conceptual meaning, simultaneously reflecting the motto of Milan Design Week, “Be the Project”, while encouraging visitors to become active players in discovering the synergies between objects and spaces through a reinterpretation of artisanal and industrial traditions.
The appearance in Milan presents a creative community that builds on the traditions of Hungarian material culture while being open to the current issues in the global design discourse. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the trends shaping Hungarian design today and how its presence is growing stronger on the international creative scene.
