KOCSIS-PINTÉR BORBÁLA EV. / SPIN 'N' FOX

Please introduce your company and what products you manufacture.

Spin ’n’ Fox is a creative workshop and teaching space based in Budapest, where several makers work together, and the transmission of craft knowledge is just as important as the development of the tools themselves. In the workshop, we primarily teach weaving and spinning. In addition, I design and produce weaving frames, looms, spinning wheels, and other spinning tools and accessories required for textile creation. These tools occupy a unique position in the market. Although they are designed with an artisanal mindset, their design already takes CNC-based manufacturing into account, making them suitable for small-series production or even larger-scale manufacturing.

Why did you apply for the mentoring programme?

To bring harmony to the dual nature of craft-based education and product development. For a workshop like ours, a key question is how to preserve the personal nature of creation while making production scalable so that the products can reach a wider audience. In this process, the mentoring programme provided an important framework, particularly for business planning, marketing, and brand building.

Your tools are traditional, yet redesigned. How do they differ from their predecessors?

The tools developed by Spin ’n’ Fox are unique in that they are rooted in traditional forms and operating principles, yet are reimagined for today’s needs. Thanks to digital design and CNC machining, they are more precise, more consistent, and easier to reproduce than their classical predecessors, while still preserving their original functionality. This is particularly important in education, where user-friendly, reliable tools greatly facilitate the learning process.

How are these items manufactured?

The production process also reflects this hybrid approach: each item begins with digital design, followed by machine-based manufacturing of the components. These parts are then assembled and refined by hand. In this way, the precision of series production and the quality of craftsmanship are both present in every single piece.

Who is your primary customer base?

Our customer base is highly diverse. From hobby makers and experienced craftspeople to artists and educators, many people use these tools. Participants in our workshops also play an important role. Education and product use are closely interconnected, as the tools are often integrated directly into the learning process.

What do you think was the most valuable benefit of the mentoring programme for you?

The greatest benefit of the mentoring programme was that it helped us systematise and make our operations more conscious. For a highly specialised, niche brand, it is particularly important to clearly define who we are speaking to, what makes us unique, and how to communicate this consistently. The programme helped us sharpen this focus and develop a more deliberate market presence. In addition, such an environment can also foster new professional connections, whether with manufacturing partners or through collaborations with other makers.

Have you formed any new partnerships as a result of the mentoring programme?

The most important direction for Spin ’n’ Fox moving forward is to establish a more coherent and streamlined system across all levels of operation. This includes building a conscious and consistent communication strategy that clearly conveys the brand’s values and focus.

What are your plans after the mentoring programme, and how do you intend to apply what you have learned?

The knowledge gained during the mentoring programme will primarily be used to narrow and structure our product range. In parallel, we aim to simplify and make our production processes more transparent, in order to create a more efficient and sustainable manufacturing chain. This direction will allow the workshop to operate in a more focused way, while placing even greater emphasis on quality, education, and the brand’s character.
